FUT or FUE: Which Hair Transplant Procedure is for You?

Premature hair loss Premature hair loss is probably one of the most dreaded conditions by anyone. Fortunately, it is the dawn of a new age. There are various procedures to get back a full head of hair.

You may come across the terms FUE and FUT when looking into hair transplant. You only need to decide which one is best for you.

FUE vs. FUT: How Do They Differ?

There are two techniques used for hair transplant and here are some pieces of basic information about them:

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

Using a punch tool, the ones performing the operation remove each hair graft from the donor area without removing any strip of tissue. They harvest fewer follicles during a normal session because they remove these follicles one by one.

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant)

In this procedure, they extract a thin strip of tissue from the donor area, usually the back of the head, and they transplant them on the recipient region. This is the preferred procedure by physicians for patients with a more advanced hair loss condition.

Pain Management, Scarring, and Cost

When it comes to pain management, scarring, and cost, there are a few differences between FUT and FUE.

Pain Management

Pain and discomfort are very manageable with pain medications for both FUE and FUT. However, some patients report they experience more discomfort with FUT procedures. Additionally, FUE has a faster healing time.

Scarring

They remove the hair individually from the scalp, so FUE requires no stitches. This means no linear scar is visible. On the other hand, FUT leaves a scar on the back of the head that is very narrow and linear, around 1mm or less in diameter.

Cost

FUE costs a bit more than FUT because of its time-sensitive nature, as the physician needs to remove hair follicle individually. Pricing for FUT is on a per graft basis.

Both FUT and FUE transplant in the UK are very simple outpatient surgeries. Consulting with a qualified physician will get you a better picture of the procedures and will let you know which one best suits you.
