Worried About Coffee Stains? You Don’t Have to Quit Drinking

If you’re one those who can’t live a day without coffee, you may be concerned about yellow tooth stains over time. While quitting is the best way to stop discoloration, you don’t have to reach that point. The good news is that there are a few things (that don’t involve quitting) to avoid further stains while enjoying your favorite beverage.

Use a straw

This tip works well if you like drinking iced coffee. Using a straw minimizes the amount of beverage that comes in contact with your teeth. It might feel weird drinking warm coffee using a straw, but you can still try it.

Brush your teeth immediately

Lakeville family dental professionals note that letting the beverage linger in your teeth only contributes to more stain. This is why it’s best to brush your teeth at least an hour after drinking. If you can’t brush right away, rinse your mouth with water or chew sugarless gum.

Drink plenty of water

If immediate brushing is not possible, drink plenty of water after enjoying your coffee. It is also a good idea to drink water between the beverages, or alternate a sip of coffee with water. This helps wash away the dark liquid from the surface of the teeth.

Visit your dentist regularly

If your teeth are already noticeably yellow, you can benefit from a professional teeth whitening procedure. This can remove the stains and discoloration caused by drinking coffee and other habits.

Drink in moderation

Your teeth are likely to turn yellow faster if you consume several cups of coffee or other teeth-staining beverages, such as soda, tea, or wine per day. Enjoy your favorite beverage in moderation, and don’t forget to keep up with proper oral hygiene.

You don’t have to give up coffee completely to avoid tooth stains. Keep these things in mind to avoid further discoloration.
